Queen’s speech legalizes autonomous cars in U.K

Autonomous car manufacturers might start to look at the United Kingdom as a viable alternative to Europe or the U.S., thanks to proposed new reforms on insurance legislation that now covering autonomous cars.
Announced in the Queen’s Speech to Parliament earlier today, the reforms allow autonomous cars to be tested and purchased in the U.K. When passed by Parliament, it will be the first legislation of its kind to cover an entire country.

We don’t think this means fully autonomous cars are purchasable, but autonomous features will be allowed inside U.K. cars. This means things like Tesla’s Model S autonomous lane switching or Ford’s self-parking should be available in the next few years.
Nissan, a major automotive supplier in the U.K., plans to add autonomous features to its Qashqai cars in 2017.
Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover are testing autonomous cars in the U.K. already, in project cities like London and Milton Keynes, and will now be able to test the cars across the country. Volvo has also chosen the U.K. as its headquarters for autonomous car development.

U.K. to be a self-driving hotspot?

We suspect other European-based automotive companies may look at the U.K., which is less restrictive than other European countries on autonomous cars. Take France, for example, only one automotive company is allowed to test cars in the country, the PSA Group.
Germany is another country behind the times with autonomous cars, but Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she’ll address the situation. Italy and Spain have also only had tests in the country; no meaningful legislation to legalize autonomous cars has been implemented in the countries.
It is not just autonomous cars where the U.K. is racing ahead, the country has been praisedfor its relaxed drone laws. The British government has invested millions into IoT and big data developments, in an effort to make the U.K. (and more specifically London) a tech center equivalent to Silicon Valley.

Avocado spread is a thing, but it's not as delicious as it sounds

LONDON — Brits love an avocado. So much so, that people in the U are now buying more avocados than oranges.
But, just when you thought Britain's passion for the avocado couldn't get any more ardent, one store just launched avocado spread.
Alas, Tesco's avocado spread isn't akin to almond butter, or peanut butter. It's a dairy-free buttery spread that looks a lot like butter or margarine.
The spread contains 24% avocado oil, so it's similar to an olive spread, only it's made with avocado oil.
The avocado spread is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and is a source of vitamin A, D and Omega 3 fatty acids.
People on Twitter are not all that convinced, however...

This man is on a mission to help feed homeless people in Scotland

Https%3a%2f%2fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2fuploads%2fcard%2fimage%2f86033%2fscottish_man_feeding_homeless_header

LONDON — A 24-year-old man from Edinburgh in Scotland is launching a campaign to try and feed as many homeless people as possible.
Last Friday, fast-food worker Robert Aitken bought 60 burgers and went out onto the streets of Edinburgh to give them to the people he found sleeping rough.

A photo of Aitken — who apparently works over 60 hours a week — was shared on Facebook by Mat Bryant.
"He pays for this from his own pocket and asks for nothing in return," Bryant said. The post has been shared almost 80,000 times since it was uploaded on Saturday.
Aitken himself also took to Facebook to tell his story, and to link to a JustGiving page he's set up in an attempt to raise £500 ($721) for local homeless people.

Here's Aitken's story in full.

Finally heading home from Edinburgh after my very first feeding the homeless ambition. Going into McDonalds and spending £70 of my own cash in order to see these HUMAN BEINGS fight on one more day, I met so many amazing people with so many amazing, humorous and some horrible stories about these people. You luve lifes off luxury compared to these himans that face a day to day challenge to stay alive. 3 hours I have been out and I am freezing, I cannot imagine how they last the cold nights out there.
I met a man named Davie, his story hit my heart the most. He had been serving his country for 13 years and had to leave because he had ptsd. Coming back to civilization after so many years at war wasn't easy for him. He began to break down, a grown man breaking down because he has nothing. I became overwhelmed and began to cry myself. I hugged him and said your not alone. These small words can change someones thoughts about life and the future. Also giving them some food gives them that bit of hope that there is decent human beings out there. My mission when I set out was to get a smile on skmeones face and I feel I have achieved this with every person I spoke to tonight.
My only ask of this post is to simply look differently at homeless people. They are human beings. The have got feelings. They want the same as everyone else, to live a life of happiness. A simple gesture of me sitting sleaking with them, hugging, crying and laughing with them has left me feeling amazing that I have impacted so many people. I started out with 60 cheeseburgers, some fries and a few bottles of water and some cups.
I have set up a funding page to help with the financial side of things. I would be over the moon if I could get to do this on a weekly basis. Unfortunatly my income is not enough to support this challenge.
This is not a post seeking likes or shares but simply a post that is asking you to look at a different way of judging people, or making an impression of someone. Sit down have a talk with them and you will realise how similiar these great people are to ourselfs. Ohhh and please buy them some food and water. Its the vitals in life they dont care about anything else.
I have set up a just giving page for anyone who wishes to donate. Every little helps.
At the time of writing, Aitken has already raised well over £2000 ($2884) on his JustGiving page.
He's continuing to go out and help homeless people, too.
Aitken told the Edinburgh Evening News that he's thought about doing what he did last Friday for awhile now.
"My aim is to raise awareness of these people and what some of them have gone through," he said.
"Homeless people are human beings, they've got feelings and want exactly the same as everyone else."

Largest UK Internet Provider Enables Default Porn Censors

David-cameron-pornography-censorshipThe UK's largest Internet provider, British Telecom (BT), has announced that it will turn on porn filters by default for all new customers.
The move comes months after Prime Minister David Cameron started a campaign to fight against porn and other sensitive content that could be harmful for children.
"New customers will have to make a choice on whether or not to activate the parental controls when setting up their Internet connection for the first time," BT wrote in a press release. "The option of having the controls implemented is pre-selected and customers have to confirm that choice or actively choose not to switch on the controls which block content potentially unsuitable for children."
And what about the almost 7 million existing BT users? In 2014, they will receive a somewhat awkward request from BT, asking them if they want to set up the same filtering controls — basically asking whether they'd like to be able to access porn sites or not.
The well-intentioned program, championed by Cameron, has received a fair amount of criticism. The Daily Beast called it "idiotic."
Further incensing critics, Cameron also praised major ISP TalkTalk's filtering system which, it turned out,was developed in partnership with Chinese network company Huawei. The U.S. and UK governments have repeatedly accused that company of spying on its customers on behalf of the Chinese government.
All six major UK providers have agreed to apply Cameron's porn filters by default. TalkTalk and Sky are already asking their customers if they want to turn them off when they set up their home broadband connection, and Virgin Media is expected to follow suit soon. Together, these four providers have more than 20 million subscribers, or 95% of all UK home broadband connections.
BT's filtering system will have three levels: strict, moderate and light. In addition to sites containing pornography, illegal drugs and those that promote suicide, the filters can block less pernicious content such as nudity, social networking, and gaming, as reported by the BBC.
In August, several UK ISPs told Internet freedom advocates at the Open Rights Group that the system will end up censoring way more than just porn.
"David Cameron wants people to sleepwalk into censorship," Open Rights Group's Jim Killock wrote at the time.
"Internet filtering can easily block more content than it is designed to," the group wrote in a separate blog post during the summer. "For example, if people do not understand what is being blocked and why, or if sites are incorrectly categorized."
And furthermore, if a site gets unfairly blocked and loses money because of it, it's unclear how it will be able to seek recourse.
"BT is not responsible for any of the site categorizations as these are done by our third party specialist vendor," BT responded to a series of questions posed by the group. "Our processes will ensure blocking errors are dealt with in a timely manner and each case will be dealt with on an individual basis."
