NASA and the UAE Just Signed a Space Agreement to Collaborate on Mars



Early Sunday morning, NASA announced it had signed a “significant” space agreement with the United Arab Emirates’ space agency, one that NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said will help advance NASA’s journey to Mars.
Bolden has spent the last few days in the Middle East in talks with representatives from Israel, Jordan and the UAE to talk about the possibility of cooperation on NASA’s Mars mission. The agreement between NASA and the UAE came as something of a surprise, as there had been little indication that such an agreement between the two space agencies was imminent.
Representatives from the two agencies first met at NASA’s DC Headquarters in March of 2015, and expressed interest in collaborating earlier this year at a meeting in Abu Dhabi.
“Every single nation can play a part in our journey to Mars, in our scientific journey of discovery and in the next phase of humanity’s development as a spacefaring people,” said Bolden, writing about his “space diplomacy” mission to the Middle East on his blog.
Although the UAE’s space agency was only created in 2014, the country has had a small presence in space for about three decades and plans to send an unmanned probe to Mars by 2020.
The UAE’s Mars mission has come under fire for being too ambitious, but then again so has NASA’s plan to put humans on the Red Planet by the 2030s due to lack of congressional funding.
“NASA is leading an ambitious journey to Mars that includes partnerships with the private sector and many international partners,” said Bolden. “I am confident this new framework agreement with the UAE Space Agency will help advance this journey, as well as other endeavors in the peaceful exploration of outer space.”
The exact nature of the UAE/NASA deal is unclear, and may be little more than another memorandum of understanding such has been made between the UAE and several other countries in the last few months, including China, Russia, the UK, andJapan. According to NASA’s statement on the agreement, it included a formal “Implementing Arrangement” that outlines Mars exploration as the first field of cooperation between the agencies and establishes a steering committee to identify areas of mutual interest.
The NASA statement further details the agreement in vague terms about “cooperation and collaboration in space science, operational Earth observation and Earth science, aeronautics, space operations and exploration, education, technology, safety and mission assurance, and other areas.” This may include joint use of aircraft, spacecraft, scientific instruments, and ground-based antennas for tracking or data acquisition.
Some of these projects are already underway: For example, the UAE signed an agreement with the US Strategic Command to share data and services related to space situational awareness in April.
NASA was contacted for further comment clarifying the nature of the UAE agreement, but had not responded at the time of this writing. This piece will be updated with further information if it becomes available.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has confirmed the news that on June 1, 2016, Saturn will be closest to Earth than it has ever been in the past 10,000 years. This astronomical sight is going to be really special, especially for all astronomy lovers and students.

The last few years have been really incredible for NASA and other space agencies of the world, especially for Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The search of life on Mars has been the major attraction in the last couple of years.

This sight is going to be 'unlike any other astronomical sight.'

Saturn does not often come this close to Earth, and this will be a sight no one currently living has ever seen.

He says that NASA hopes to see the opposite side of Saturn as it rotates by.


The other side of the second largest planet in our solar system has never been photographed yet.

This isn't going to be an ordinary space event!


We are extremely excited to be able to study this planet better, but also, that people will be able to get a glimpse of an amazing, ringed planet, which is not something normally able to happen," Pooler continues.

We have some images of Saturn from the last rotation, but this will be an amazing sight that will blow the last time out of the water.

United Arab Emirates Plans to Create Space Program, Land Mars Probe

The United Arab Emirates has jumped into the international space race at a full sprint,announcing plans on Wednesday to create a space program and send an unmanned probe to Mars by 2021.
"The UAE Mars probe represents the Islamic world’s entry into the era of space exploration," UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan said, according to Reuters. "We will prove that we are capable of delivering new scientific contributions to humanity."

The proposed space program is the latest costly project for the country, which has one of the top 10 GDP per capita income in the world. It previously constructed the world's tallest skyscraper and recently announced plans to create a climate-controlled city.
In the statement announcing the space program, officials said they are seeking to foster growth in the country's technology sectors and diversify its economy. According to the National, the UAE has already invested 20 billion dirhams (approximately $5.9 billion) in space technology, and plans to launch the Mars probe in 2021 in tandem with its 50th anniversary.
If successful, the UAE would join the U.S. and Russia as one of the only countries to successfully send an unmanned probe to Mars. However, Haym Benaroya, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Rutgers University, said he is skeptical about the project's plausibility.
"I certainly support them doing it, it's a great thing to do, but I think they'll have a hard time doing that by 2021," he told Mashable. "I'm sure eventually they could do it if they wanted to, but Mars has a long history of being difficult to land on, even for the U.S. and Russia, who have a lot more experience."
Benaroya added that in a half century of sending missions to Mars, only 50% have made it to their destination. "My view is that its a positive thing they want to do, but I think it might be more difficult than they anticipate, so the timeline they gave themselves might be really challenging," he said. "If I were advising the UAE I would advise them to go to the moon first."
The mission would last from 9 months to a year depending on when the probe, which would travel 37.5 million-miles, is launched.
Despite doubts about the UAE's ability to complete the project, the country remains confident in its mission.
“We chose the epic challenge of reaching Mars because epic challenges inspire us and motivate us," President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan said. "The moment we stop taking on such challenges is the moment we stop moving forward.”

China Wants a Manned Moon Mission, Experts Say

China this week became the third nation to land a rover on the Moon, and experts believe the country will follow up with a manned mission to the lunar surface in just a matter of years. The country's rapidly improving program and America's perceived lack of direction could, years from now, lead to a new space race.
The spacecraft Chang'e 3 and its rover, Yutu, are only on the lunar surface to explore. But China's zeal for space is unmatched, and its program is developing fast — to the point that it can be recognized as a space power. Just what that means for the U.S. is up for debate.
"I'm not saying they're militarizing space, or occupying it or [that] they're going to claim the moon ... but there's always that consideration in that relationship between countries," Paul Spudis, a scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute, told Mashable.
For Spudis, the issue is not China's presence in the lunar region, but the United States' absence. He's worried a country that doesn't advocate for a free market could some day stifle how other nations and private businesses operate in space.
"I don't think it's anything to panic about," Spudis said. "It's something to think about seriously."
John Logsdon, former director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, told Mashable that if China wants to play with the big powers on Earth, they bhad etter play with them in space, too. That means, at some point, a manned trip to the Moon.
China has launched several military satellites, which have also caused consternation among some U.S. officials. But Logsdon thinks China's program has caused undue alarm. What the Chinese have done is impressive, sure, but they're a long way from their own mission to Mars.
"People have very short attention spans," Logsdon said. "A year and a half ago we landed a remarkable rover on Mars, and it's producing all kinds of discoveries."
Pascal Lee, planetary scientist at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute, toldMashable he wouldn't disagree that America's program is superior. But he feels China's recent success needs to renew American interest in the space program because Beijing's progress has been steady for years, and their missions have so far been almost flawless.
What's more, China seems to have its eyes on tougher missions in the near future. Chang'e 3 is big enough to hold much more than the rover it deposited, meaning the Chinese could have fit a larger, more capable robot in there. With a few more upgrades, they might be able to squeeze in a person or two.
"The truth is these events are really remarkable and they need to get our attention," Lee said. "As soon as we see a Chinese astronaut walking on the Moon, I think it's going to become a national interest of the U.S. to get back to the Moon."

Planet Labs Raises $52 Million to Map the Earth With Small Satellites

NASA may be devoting more attention to asteroids these days, but a group of former employees of the agency are focusing on something a little closer to home.
Planet Labs, a San Francisco startup founded by three former NASA physicists, announcedWednesday that it has raised $52 million in a Series B round of funding to launch of a bunch of imaging satellites into orbit and map the earth.

Since its founding in 2010, the Planet Labs team has worked to develop small satellites called "Doves" that are launched into low orbit to measure the planet's environmental changes in high resolution. That data is updated frequently and provided to paying clients. Planet Labs launched four satellites into orbit this year and plans to launch another two dozen in the immediate future.
The new round of funding was led by Yuri Milner, the Russian billionaire who has also invested inFacebook and Twitter, among other notable tech companies. In a statement, he praised the startup for "revolutionizing the spacecraft sector" and "pushing the boundaries of what was thought to be possible in satellite manufacturing and deployment."
Planet Labs has raised about $65 million since it was founded in 2010.

One of the best meteor showers of the year is set to put on a performance Friday night, but if you can't catch the cosmic display in person, you can watch it live online.
The Geminid meteor shower — named for the constellation Gemini — is peaking late tonight into Saturday morning, potentially treating stargazers in light-free areas to about 90 to 120 meteors per hour. Observers can expect to get the best views of the shower, weather permitting, at around 4 a.m. local time in the wee hours of Saturday morning after the waxing moon sets, according to Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office.
"This year, there will be a magic hour starting at about 4 a.m. up until dawn that there will be no moon and you'll be able to see the Geminids in their full glory," Cooke told reporters on Dec. 11. Space fans everywhere can catch the meteor show live online through two webcasts from the online Slooh Space Camera and NASA. You can watch both NASA and Slooh's live webcasts on SPACE.com.
NASA is hosting a Web chat about the meteor shower beginning at 11 p.m. EST. Cooke and two of his team members — Danielle Moser and Rhiannon Blaauw — will answer questions from the public about the Geminids during the "up all night" webcast. Geminid meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Gemini and have a reputation for being bright and slow. The shower can also produce brilliant fireballs that streak through the sky.

"The best thing to do to observe meteors is to lie flat on your back and look straight up," Cooke said. "You don't want to look at Gemini, you just want to look straight up and take in as much of the sky as possible because meteors can appear anywhere in the sky and the more sky you see, the better you chance of seeing a meteor."

Meteor showers are created when Earth passes through streams of debris left behind by asteroids or comets. Pieces of space rock and dust are in space are called meteoroids and they become meteors when they burn up in the atmosphere. Meteorites are pieces of meteors that make it to Earth's surface.

The Geminid shower happens every year when Earth passes through the trail of debris left behind the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. The meteor display was first officially detected in the 1800s when the peak was marked by only 20 meteors per hour.

After realizing the $10.41 in his piggy bank wouldn't be enough to support NASA, a 6-year-old boy with dreams of becoming an astronaut decided to petition President Barack Obama's administration to increase funding for the space program.
Under the advisement of his parents, Connor Johnson of Denver, Colo., filed his plea on the government website We the People. In less than two weeks, the petition has garnered more than 10,000 digital signatures.
"NASA's mostly the only space company I've known for a very long time," Connor said in a video on local news station KUSA.
The timing of Connor's petition is poignant, as NASA's planetary science branch recently announced it would restructure its research funding process.
That announcement has ruffled the feathers of many in the planetary science community who now won't be able to apply for new grants until 2015. Science celebrity Bill Nye implored Obama to increase NASA's funding in an impassioned open letter he read in a YouTube video posted last week.
Connor seems to share Nye's sentiment that space exploration shouldn't fall victim to budget cuts.

The risk of radiation exposure is not a show-stopper for a long-term manned mission to Mars, new results from NASA's Curiosity rover suggest.
A mission consisting of a 180-day cruise to Mars, a 500-day stay on the Red Planet and a 180-day return flight to Earth would expose astronauts to a cumulative radiation dose of about 1.01 sieverts, measurements by Curiosity's Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) instrument indicate.
To put that in perspective: The European Space Agency generally limits its astronauts to a total career radiation dose of 1 sievert, which is associated with a 5% increase in lifetime fatal cancer risk.

"It's certainly a manageable number," said RAD principal investigator Don Hassler of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., lead author of a study that reports the results Monday in the journal Science.
A 1-sievert dose from radiation on Mars would violate NASA's current standards, which cap astronauts' excess-cancer risk at 3 percent. But those guidelines were drawn up with missions to low-Earth orbit in mind, and adjustments to accommodate trips farther afield may be in the offing, Hassler said.
"NASA is working with the National Academies' Institute of Medicine to evaluate what appropriate limits would be for a deep-space mission, such as a mission to Mars," Hassler told SPACE.com. "So that's an exciting activity."
The new results represent the most complete picture yet of the radiation environment en route to Mars and on the Red Planet's surface. They incorporate data that RAD gathered during Curiosity's eight-month cruise through space and the rover's first 300 days on Mars, where it touched down in August 2012.
The RAD measurements cover two different types of energetic-particle radiation — galactic cosmic rays (GCRs), which are accelerated to incredible speeds by far-off supernova explosions, and solar energetic particles (SEPs), which are blasted into space by storms on our own sun.

RAD's data show that astronauts exploring the Martian surface would accumulate about 0.64 millisieverts of radiation per day. The dose rate is nearly three times greater during the journey to Mars, at 1.84 millisieverts per day.
But Mars' radiation environment is dynamic, so Curiosity's measurements thus far should not be viewed as the final word, Hassler stressed. For example, RAD's data have been gathered near the peak of the sun's 11-year activity cycle, a time when the GCR flux is relatively low (because solar plasma tends to scatter galactic cosmic rays).
Curiosity's radiation measurements should help NASA plan out a manned mission to Mars, which the space agency hopes to pull off by the mid-2030s, Hassler said. And they should also inform the search for signs of past or present life on the Red Planet — another top NASA priority.
For example, the new RAD results suggest that microbial life is unlikely to exist right at the Martian surface, Hassler said. But future missions may not have to drill too deeply underground to find pockets of Mars life, if it ever existed.
"These measurements do tell us that we think it could be viable to find signs of possible extant or past life as shallow as 1 meter deep," Hassler said.
The new study is one of six papers published in Science Monday that report new results from Curiosity. Most of the other studies present evidence that the rover has found an ancient freshwater lake that could have supported microbial life for tens of thousands, and perhaps millions, of years.

The site where NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity landed last year contains at least one lake that would have been perfectly suited for colonies of simple, rock-eating microbes found in caves and hydrothermal vents on Earth.
Analysis of mudstones in an area known as Yellowknife Bay, located inside the rover’s Gale Crater landing site, show that fresh water pooled on the surface for tens of thousands — or even hundreds of thousands — of years.

“The results show that the lake was definitely a habitable environment,” Curiosity lead scientist John Grotzinger, with the California Institute of Technology, told Discovery News.
The really big surprise, however, was that clays drilled out from inside two mudstones and analyzed by the rover are much younger than scientists expected, a finding that extends the window of time for when Mars may have been suitable for life.

These numbers now overlap with the oldest rocks on Earth that contain evidence of a former biosphere on Earth,” Grotzinger said.

Curiosity landed in August 2012 to assess if Gale Crater had the right ingredients and environments to support ancient microbial life. Within six months, scientists had the answer to that question: Yes.
Now, in addition to characterizing specific potential habitats, scientists are coming up with a search strategy to determine which sites hold the most promise for finding organic carbon, a far more difficult and complex challenge and the focus of future studies at Mount Sharp.
“Habitability only requires that the chemicals and minerals in the rock preserve evidence of an ancient environment. To search for organic carbon you’re actually looking for particular material ... that is not really compatible with the present environment of Mars. To find something you need a guidebook, you need some rules,” Grotzinger said.
One of those rules involves how much radiation a rock has been exposed to. Mars today has only has a thin atmosphere and no protective magnetic field, so scientists have been thinking they will need to dig deep to find carbon-laced samples, or they will have to probe craters relatively recently excavated by an impact.
Analysis of the Yellowknife Bay rocks points to another path. Dating the ages of the rocks’ surfaces show they are as young as about 70 million years, the result of being sand-blasted by Martian winds.

“In the future, if we find a rock that looks like a place where organics were accumulating and if it looks like the chemistry would have been favorable for preservation ... we can now very deliberately manage the risk that the rock would have been cooking away in the presence of radiation for hundreds of millions of years by looking for these scarps, these miniature cliffs, and then drilling the rock and date it to see how long it’s been laying around,” Grotzinger said.
In related research, scientists found that the amount of radiation measured by Curiosity during its first year on the Martian surface is about 40% of what the rover experienced during its nine-month cruise.
Most of the reduction, as expected, is due to the planet’s body serving as a buffer, but scientists also found that solar activity is a key factor, said Cary Zeitlin at Southwest Research Institute.
Six papers on Curiosity’s new findings are published in this week’s journal Science and unveiled at the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco.
