Season 28 of 'The Amazing Race' already feels like a #TeamInternet party

Race2

The show kicked off Friday night with 11 teams racing around Mexico City (Spoiler alert: No one got eliminated). While the competition — like other seasons — is stressful and fast-paced, there is one thing that stands out in Season 28: Camaraderie among the competitors.
The teams, made up of digital stars, hail from what's lovingly referred to as #TeamInternet. And it was obvious that even without their devices (no phones allowed!) to connect them to their fans and respected social media platforms, they took comfort in each other.
As they all headed to their respective airports, some teams bumped into each other — and were happy about it.
"If we were in college we’d go after Cole," Instagram models Jessica Versteeg and Brittany Oldehoff joked when they ran into fellow competitor Viner Cole LaBrant and his mom, Sheri, at the airport.
"I'm a huge fan!" YouTuber Blair Fowler, who is competing with her dad Scott, said when she ran into YouTube superstar Tyler Oakely and his BFF fellow video blogger Korey Kuhl.
"Come love me," Oakley said back, going in for a hug.
And when they were all together in Mexico City — even through all the rigorous tasks at hand — they seemed to be happy in each other's company. It felt like a #TeamInternet party, with all of CBS' viewers watching.
Digital stars have been crossing over into traditional entertainment spaces for so long that it's no longer really a trend. ABC's Dancing With The Stars has long been including digital stars in its line-up of competitors, most notably with the addition of YouTube lifestyle video blogger Bethany Mota.
Last year, YouTubers Grace Helbig and Todrick Hall got their own television shows on E! and MTV, respectively. Also in 2015, the fifth annual Streamy Awards, which honor excellence in online video and those who create it, was for the first time broadcast both on television and online (on VH1's digital platforms). Strategically, presenters spanned the entertainment spectrum, from more traditional celebrities like Paula Abdul and Ciara to YouTube giants Michelle Phan and Smosh.
But crossovers don't always work. Helbig's show didn't get picked up for another season and MTV has yet to announce whether Hall will get renewed.
By stacking up the season with all digital influencers, CBS bet big on the line-up.
So far, according to early Nielsen ratings, it seems to be paying off.
There was tons of Twitter engagement, but still not as high as one might think with the star power of digital influencers. The show racked up 37,883 tweets, according to Nielsen TV ratings. Of the tweets, 17,023 — almost 45% — contained "reactions," or tweets with emotions, according to social TV platform Canvs. The company uses tweets, provided by Nielsen, to determine what emotions people have about TV.
Per social, media, the season favorite so far is unsurprisingly Oakely and Kuhl. The duo were trending throughout the broadcast's East Coast time.
