Franchises Dominated the Film Industry in 2013

The box office was a popular place this past year, rife with sequels, long-awaited releases of movies once-announced for 2012 and the ever prevalent dose of dystopia that keeps audiences entertained.
The Great Gatsby and World War Z, both originally scheduled to hit theaters in 2012, made their debuts in 2013, after rewrites and supposed production problems. The Hunger Games sequel followed heroine Katniss throughout her victory tour, but per usual, the odds are rarely in her favor. In other sequel releases, Iron Man 3 topped the box offices, and Fast and The Furious 6 proved that given a strong fan-base, fast cars and cool stunts, the sixth movie in a franchise that started 12 years ago might end up being that franchise's biggest commercial success yet (Fast and the Furious 7 is currently on hold, per Paul Walker's death).
All in all, 2013 didn't fail to entertain and movie-goers the world over took to the Internet to find out more about their favorite films. Here, Bing Trends lists the top-searched movies of 2013 throughout 11 countries. And there were a few surprising takeaways:
  • The Conjuring topped the lists as the most searched horror film of 2013 across the globe. And the reviews for the possession-themed movie weren't half bad, either.
  • Interestingly, 12 Years a Slave and Gravity are nowhere to be found on any list, even in the U.S., despite wide media coverage of both.
  • Iron Man 3 made the list on 9 of the 11 countries listed here. Only those in China and India weren't often searching for it.
