Golden Age of Comedies: Most Hilarious Movies of the 90’s

Golden Age of Comedies: Most Hilarious Movies of the 90’s
Nowadays, movies are an important part of many people’s lives. And what can be better than watching a hilarious comedy with your friends? Funny moments is what stays in our minds for the longest time, and cult comedies are the best source of these moments. They are a great source of relaxation and comfort. Of course, there are a lot of modern funny movies, but the Golden Age of comedies was truly during the 90’s. The funniest films released that decade have already become cult comedies that are constantly re-watched. Making a list of the greatest of them is not an easy task, but we have decided to post our own list of the best 90’s comedies.
Dumb and Dumber

Dumb and Dumber

Released in 1994, Dumb and Dumber acquired two main comedy stars of the decade, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, who played two best friends, Lloyd and Harry. Written by brothers Farrelly, the script was rejected by many studios and actors. They did not like the title, they did not like the script, but in the end, Carrey and Jeff saw the great potential in it, and it turned out they were right.

The main Dumb and Dumber characters are two of the most dim-witted people of the 1990’s cinema, but they are exceptionally hilarious. The movie shows us their adventures in an attempt to do the right thing. The chipped tooth of Jim Carrey and the hairstyle of Daniels became iconic after the movie’s release.

Ace Ventura Pet Detective

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Jim Carrey’s improvisation on set was the key to success for many movies. Ace Ventura was not an exception. The character of Ace was altered specifically for Jim by the actor himself. This movie was the beginning of Carrey’s successful comedian career.
The main character is an animal detective whose methods of investigation are very eccentric. Nevertheless, he does his job well. In his attempt to find a missing dolphin, Ace Ventura unravels great schemes, meets a wonderful woman Melissa, and, what is more, makes you laugh at his funny faces and comments every five minutes. The voice that Jim Carrey used for this movie was funny itself, and it matched his crazy character extremely well.

The Mask

The Mask

The year 1994 was the most successful period for the great comedian Jim Carrey. That was the year he starred in three comedies that were number one at the box office. Among them, The Mask is undoubtedly the funniest one.
The Mask characters are funny in all aspects, especially the “masked” Ipkiss: he sings, dances, makes balloon animals, and he can pull anything out of his pockets. This movie shows us an incredible change from the simple boring Stanley Ipkiss to the amazing “Mask”—a supernatural character who can woo women and defeat criminals. The movie received positive critical reviews and is one of the highest grossing films as well. The magnificent acting skills of Jim Carrey and an interesting plot make The Mask a cult classic.
The movie is simply “smokin’”!

Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is a light family comedy that makes you believe not only in miracles but in your own power as well. Phil Connors is the main character of the movie. He is portrayed by one of the most talented comedy actors of all time, Bill Murray.
This comedy has two sides—one of them is funny, and it shows an exceptional sense of humor of the character and his fails, the second one is more deep and significant. Phil has to reexamine his life and try to live it to the fullest. Though the movie shows only one day that repeats itself countless times, Groundhog Day is full of exciting events and funny situations. The behavior of Connors never repeats, and he always does something new.

Liar Liar

Liar Liar

After the year of Jim Carrey’s triple success, there was one more movie that can be considered the 90’s classic comedy. Liar Liar is a picture that shows one of the most varied array of actor’s facial expressions and grimacing.
The plot follows a lawyer who always lies. One day, his son makes a wish for the father never to be able to lie. It becomes a groundbreaking event for the main character as all his career is built on dishonesty and deception. During the whole movie, you can watch him struggle with his own treacherous mouth. The performance of the actor deserves only high praise.

Austin Powers

Austin Powers

In 1997, the funniest movie about super spies was released. The main character, Austin Powers, is an iconic spy of the 90’s. The movie’s main antagonist is the famous villain, Dr. Evil with cat. In general, it looks like a parody of the James Bond franchise, but it is also valuable by itself.
The simple idea of a “super sexy” spy from the 70’s revived in the 90’s brought the attention of the audience to it. This parody was written by Mike Myers, who also plays two main roles in the movies—both the spy Austin Powers and Dr. Evil. It seems that the actor/script writer was the key to its success. As it was with many classic comedies, many scenes of Austin Powers were improvised, which made the movie only better.

Senseless

Senseless

Senseless is a great teen physical comedy that was released in 1998. The main character of Senseless, a young student Darryl, is portrayed by Marlon Wayans—a talented actor who is famous for such moves as Scary Movie, White Chicks, and G.I. Joe.
The main character is a student who desperately needs some cash. Looking for money, he becomes a guinea pig in a scientific experiment. The serum is meant to enhance all his five senses, but something goes wrong, and the boy keeps “losing” them one by one. Unexpected absence of one sense or another always leads him to funny situations. Another funny character of the movie is Darryl’s neighbor who has many piercings on the most unimaginable parts of his body and adds some “freaky” atmosphere to the movie.

American Pie

American Pie

The American Pie franchise is the most famous series of teen comedies. It shows five male friends, their school life, and their problems with girls. The group makes a pact to have sex before graduation. Every character is different. Each of them chooses his own way to complete this agreement. The only problem is that it turns out to be a difficult task.
The movie is a classic teen comedy, but it is also a unique one. It was American Pie that set the tendencies and style for most modern comedies about schools and universities. Almost each joke in the movie is so precious that it has been repeated countless times in movie after movie. Watching American Pie with your friends is always a pleasurable experience.

Home Alone

Home Alone

What can be a better praise for a movie than it becoming an annual tradition? Home Alone is a cult movie that is watched all over the world on Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Everybody knows the movie about a boy who had defended his home from burglars when he was alone at home. Everybody knows the talented young boy, Macaulay Culkin, who plays the main character of Home Alone, Kevin McCallister. It is the best live-action comedy of all times. The success of the first part ensured the release of four sequels.
It is a great movie to watch with your family at any time of the year. Most of us know the movie almost by heart as it is one of the most re-watched comedies ever.
