Boots for Summer? How Bella Hadid and Rita Ora Are Rocking the Look

Temperatures may be soaring, but the chicest footwear option right now isn’t sandals—it’s boots.
Instead of breezy, strappy sandals, “It” girls including Bella Hadid are opting for street-ready ankle boots. The shoes take a cue from festival-inspired rock and roll style: A pair of open-toed sandals just doesn’t cut it on a muddy field or at a live concert in the desert—and Kate Moss, the queen of rock and roll model-off-duty style, has been rocking the look for years now.
The trend is easy to pull off. Plus, it adds a tough edge to an outfit that otherwise might feel pretty basic. Take a look at Bella Hadid, who recently opted for a long-sleeved mini dress paired with platform ankle boots and socks.
If that isn’t enough to make you consider tossing your strappy sandals out the hot, humid window, Kendall Jenner also sported the look with black leather shorts, a black crop top, and a fringed jacket, while Rita Ora donned a pair of platform ankle boots with a pair of shorts and an oversize shirt.
Want to take the trend a step further? Try pairing a knee-high boot with your favorite summer sundresses and denim shorts. The look makes skimpy summer clothes—like the ubiquitous slip dress—feel more dressed up and provides extra coverage, making the outfit more wearable in a variety of different situations.
While the latest fashion trends may be all about the ‘90s, the summer boot is a throwback to the early '70s, when supermodels such as Veruschka and Jane Birkin, who were known for their glamorous style, wore knee-high boots with hot pants.
For more inspiration, look to Beyoncé and Rihanna, who have been wearing boots all summer long with just about everything, including oversize tees and thigh-grazing skirts.
