Embrace the Binge: Netflix Data Shows Viewers Usually Watch More Than One [embargo til 6am]
Netflix knows when you’ve been bad or good, or watching Homeland for 12 hours straight.More than 60% of television streamers binge watch, according to a study by the streaming content provider. Cultural anthropologist Grant McCracken was brought in to help analyze the data.
Netflix defines binge watching as watching more than two episodes in a single setting. However those half-day binges are not the norm - the average binge-watch came in at 2.3 episodes per sitting.
Of course, the behavior has not been discouraged by Netflix with the all-at-once releases of its original series House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and the new season of Arrested Development.
Viewers polled indicated a positive view of binging, with 76% saying the opportunity to watch several episodes in a row provided a refuge from their busy lives; 73% viewed binge watching as a positive thing.
